Somatic Experiencing approach is very gentle and effective to mental health therapy work with people affected by trauma and have emotion regulation difficulties due to developmental and attachment trauma and/or single-event trauma. It is a safe body and mind integrated approach that can be used with all populations and not just people with high ego strength and high cognitive resources. It provides clinicians with tools that enable grading of therapy in very refined level. It teaches a variety of techniques such as using sensory-based methods to resolve dysregulation caused by coupling dynamics (sensory, memory and cognitive), sensation, imagery, behavior, affect, and meaning tracking using pendulation and titration, to achieve trauma renegotiation. It is a resource-based method that employs mindfulness to support the nervous system to learn to regulate itself. The main theoretical foundation of SE is the Polyvagal Theory and therefore is very compatible with Attachment Theory and all the Mindfulness-based models clinicians use. It is also compatible with Positive Psychology, Wellness and Recovery models. SE can also be effectively used in educating parents and caregivers in supporting children recovering from traumatic experiences.
Participants can take only the first part and integrate it into their practice. They are not obliged to do the whole 3-year program to apply their learning to their clinical practice with clients with trauma history. Each training module comes with theory and practical components teaching useful techniques that clinicians can apply immediately with their clients. The training program goes from more general skills to more refined if clinicians decide to take more training modules.
