Mighty Munchers Therapeutic Feeding Group - Edmonton July 4 - 14 2022

Hello OTs! My colleague and I will be running a therapeutic feeding group in the summer for children with limited food repertoires that are often labelled as picky eaters. This group will be appropriate for children 3-7 years old who are selective eaters and whose parents are looking for some support in the area's of mealtimes and expanding their child's food repertoire. We are hoping to fill 10 spots! Please note: We are requiring the child to show readiness for sitting for some period of time in order for the family to get the best possible experience. We are so honored and pleased to be hosting our feeding group out of Flourish Family Centered Occupational Therapy and co, which will provide a great space for the families to enjoy! Our poster is attached! If you have any families that would benefit please pass along the information! Thank you, your support is appreciated . Looking for Feeding Therapist

I have a family that is looking for a feeding therapist with experience in oral motor skills and/or oral placement therapy experience. The kiddo is 5 with spastic quadriplegic CP and is on a G-Tube. He receives FSCD specialized services but we are unable to provide the family with feeding specific therapy - but we do practice oral motor skills. There are no issues with feeding preferences - so SOS training will not suffice for this child. The family would eventually like their son to be getting most food from oral feeds and get off the g-tube (long term). Please let me know if you are or know of someone who is trained in the oral motor aspect of feeding and could do in-home therapy.

Feeding Workshop

Dear Alberta Pediatric OTs
I highly recommend this workshop if you or one of your parents has a very challenging child to feed. It is for parents or therapists.
I attended this course a few years ago and it was extremely valuable in helping me with a particularly challenging child, and in my feeding practice in general.
Suzanne is THE feeding therapist in the world! She is warm and engaging and so knowledgeable, and the setting is gorgeous.
Laura Rogers

Dear Friend of New Visions,
I am delighted to tell you about the very special workshop that I teach near Charlottesville, VA on October 21-23.
Becoming a Mealtime Partner
Most workshops about feeding kids are taught to large groups where there is no opportunity for individual attention or focus on areas that answer your specific questions. My Mealtime Partner's workshop offers you a totally different experience.   You share learning with a group of 10-12 people.  The group includes both parents and professionals, which gives you the opportunity to hear and share many different perspectives.  I co-teach the workshop with a "Parent Partner", a mother of a child with feeding difficulties.  This offers the experience and perspective of both a therapist and a parent.
TubeFeedingBoy 8Each workshop is customized to the needs of the people who are coming.  The month before the workshop each person sends information about a child.  This includes a videotape of several mealtimes and written information that lets me know more about the child's medical and feeding history and challenges. I'm also interested in how you learn most easily and the concerns and questions you have about feeding children.  I spend more than 2 hours with this information about you and your child.  This let's me choose activities and learning materials for the workshop that meet your needs.
ChoosingFoodChild 9We all want to help our children become more comfortable and open to developing an interest in eating. We want them to have the skills to eat and drink safely and skillfully.
With the ideas from this workshop, you can help children want to eat and develop the inner motivation and skills that make mealtimes enjoyable for everyone. Check out all of the details about the workshop content, objectives, and schedule on the New Visions website.
If you have questions about the workshop or would like to register for the October 21st-23rd program, please e-mail me at sem@new-vis.com and let me know some days and times when I could call you.
My continued mission is to offer you information and products that support your caring work with children who have feeding, mealtime or oral-motor challenges.
Warmly,
Suzanne

Putting It All Together: A Comprehensive Approach to Feeding Challenges

Ellen Yack and Associates Paediatric Therapy Services Presents:

Putting It All Together:
A Comprehensive Approach to Feeding Challenges

December 4-5, 2016

Ellen Yack and Associates are very excited to announce their new upcoming course taking place in Toronto on December 4-5, 2016.  Putting It All Together: A Comprehensive Approach to Feeding Challenges will integrate best practices from the fields of speech and language pathology, occupational therapy and psychotherapy. It will provide a much needed overview on how practitioners can facilitate food expansion without disrupting the parent-child relationship. Many practitioners have attended workshops where they learn specific strategies to reduce food selectivity but these strategies are often difficult to implement or do not yield success, due to the individualized nature of feeding problems.  Some practitioners are also uncomfortable with certain strategies which can cause anxiety in the child and/or parent and may lead to negative experiences with food and mealtimes.

This workshop will include the psychotherapy perspective which focuses on the importance of creating a nurturing environment that leads to positive parent and child interactions.  We will also review current practices and help participants to develop clinical reasoning skills to determine what approaches are best suited for the complex needs of individual children.

Exciting News!  As part of our 8th Annual Conference, Marsha Dunn Klein will be speaking for an extra day to provide a post conference session to provide an over view of the Get Permission Approach to Feeding and more advanced information and case studies related to complex feeding needs and medical issues related to feeding.  We will be offering SAOT members a discounted rate for this session.

Marsha Dunn Klein:  “Overview and Advanced Topics of the Get Permission Approach to Pediatric Feeding”
Saturday January 23rd:  9:00 am - 4:00 pm

“Get Permission” is an approach to mealtimes and feeding treatment which is based on the foundation of trust in a feeding relationship. It supports children who have mealtime challenges in moving forward with mealtime goals of trust, enjoyment and confidence. It follows the child’s lead with many practical, creative and sensitive mealtime and treatment strategies.
Highlights include texture transitions, tube transitions, bridging from trusted foods and utensils to new, and treatment strategies that focus on parent success and child enjoyment and trust.

This workshop is presented to feeding therapists and parents who know children who have medical mealtime challenges. Issues of such as tube feeding, gastroesophageal reflux, allergies and sensitive texture transitions will be the focus. Advanced case studies will be discussed which include complex challenges and factors that affect a child’s return to oral eating.
(Issues specific to autism spectrum will be presented in the conference session on Anxious Eaters, Anxious Mealtimes.)

Intensive Feeding Therapy

I am working with a family who is seeking intensive feeding therapy for their four year old child.  They have access to weekly therapy through publicly funded sources.  Family is willing to travel within North America.  Child is currently 100% reliant on tube feeding and has a long list of allergies/intolerances.  Family would like for the child to eat more by mouth, child currently consumes only scant tastes and shows symptoms of substantial oral aversion.  He is medically and physically very complicated with global developmental delay.  He struggles to sit independently and requires support.  Unknown swallowing safety status.  His sensory system seems to be on high alert and he would benefit from OT being involved as part of his treatment team.

Any suggestions for intensive treatment options would be warmly welcomed.

Thank you,

Mandy Madsen, BScOT, Reg (SK)

Feeding/Swallowing Questions

I work in Saskatoon and follow a child who complains of food sticking in his throat.  He has experienced choking episodes, but they occur perhaps 1-4 times per year.  The physician has ordered a VFSS and I plan on attending the test.  I have requested an article from the June edition of Dysphagia that discusses using an unmasticated mini marshmallow to assess food sticking in the throat with adults.  Has anyone tried this strategy in the radiology suite – either with peds or adults?  I would love to speak to someone with more knowledge in this area.  Child is 6 years old and entering grade two.  Normal cognition.

Please feel free to call me at 306-655-1274 or email Amanda.madsen@saskatoonhealthregion.ca

Thanks in advance,

Private OT required for 4 year old with sensory challenges with eating

My son just recently turned 4. He has never been able to get past the smooth pureed texture. He will now eat completely smooth food items and some crunchy food (goldfish crackers, cheerios, some cookies etc). We are looking for a private OT with training in Wilbarger Brushing Protocol and/or SOS. We live just outside of Calgary and are willing to travel if necessary.  Please contact Cheryl at cjn1@telus.net or call 403-604-4478. Thank-you!

Feeding for 18yr old

Hello fellow OTs, I received a call from Andrea Mossen, a rural dietician with PCN inquiring about how best to help this new 18 year-old who has gained 30 lbs in 8 months due to decreased activity and more importantly, due to a very restricted diet which has finally caught up to her; I think Kay Toomey would say she is a problem feeder. She was initially referred to a dietician when she was 12, but refused to go. Now, she is motivated… So, there seems to be a few issues and I thought someone might be able to provide some resources for the dietician, since I have only been working here for 5 months. Here are the issues: · family issues where she will not eat with her family and has admitted she wants to increase her repertoire of foods to taste every day BUT NOT with her father or brother present; cooks her own meals after family eats · family issues: refuses to attend large family functions where eating is involved · social issues: was playing soccer intensely but not comfortable as an adult playing mixed league; has replaced soccer with weight training 4-5 times a week · sensory issues: cannot tolerate being on the same floor of the house when her mother is cooking certain foods · extremely limited foods (no vegetables, only apples, milk, ichiban noodle soup, M&M prepared foods, specific granola bars, bologna sandwich on white bread, white toasted bagel with certain cream cheese brand, three specific cereals, some smoothies, pancakes This young adult has said she wants to introduce one new food to taste per day WITH ONLY HER MOTHER present. I was concerned that perhaps she might be jumping the gun if she can’t even be physically around when her mother is preparing and cooking food. I suggested to Andrea to let this young girl know about the graduated steps to get to tasting as it sounds like she might be at the “be in the same room” level rather than the “put in my mouth” phase to maximize success and that there are steps before eating that would still be considered a step forward. We also talked about small changes in the diet with the girl’s permission (e.g., Sneaky Chef for pancakes and adding more to smoothies, etc.) I don’t actually deal with this in my current caseload and it appears that there are more than dietary issues. I am wondering if anyone has any great reading/online resources that Andrea might give to the young woman as well as who she might refer this family to, to support this 18 year old who is asking for help and is willing to make the changes necessary. I am thinking some social work/family therapy? Oh, the young woman is from Bonnyville. Andrea would appreciate if you had any suggestions, to email her andrea@bonnyvillepcn.ca or you can email Voon.YouTen@albertahealthservices.ca. Voon You Ten, BScOT Registered Occupational Therapist

Feeding Therapy

to me Dear Edmonton Colleagues, I am wondering who is doing feeding therapy as part of their caseload in Edmonton (and area)? I currently have 4 children with severe feeding difficulties that will require ongoing input from a therapist with training and experience transitioning kids off of g-tubes as well as kids that only drink pediasure with no other oral intake. I would like to do this transition over the course of the year as I plan to retire next year. These families would prefer in home programming if possible. If anyone would be interested in doing this, I would love to discuss this further. Please contact me at irma@childrensfeedingtherapy.com or 780 235 5818 Thanks! Feeding Groups in Calgary Area?

Hello,
I'm a therapist primarily doing private feeding work in the Calgary area.  I'm wondering if anyone is running feeding groups in the community?  I am heading on maternity leave shortly and have two little ones on my caseload that would really benefit from something in this format.

Please contact me at melissabw@me.com with any information.

Thank you!
