Commencing immediately, Building Blocks Therapeutics Inc. is recruiting 1-2 Occupational Therapists for two schools within Edmonton for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year with a strong possibility of renewal for the 2022-2023 school year.

·         Monthly salary range for this position is $6,400 to $7,900.00 based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE = 40 hours per week) and years of experience.

·         The Occupational Therapist in this position is primarily responsible for assessment, consultation, capacity building for staff and families. The Occupational Therapist will work with Speech Language Pathologist, Behavioral Specialist and those addressing the needs of children in preschool and school age children.

  • The right candidate for this position should have professional expertise to identify, diagnose and treat delays and disorders in fine- and gross-motor, visual perceptual, regulation, and self-help. They will also be required to demonstrate for teachers and parents effective, occupational therapy strategies that support the needs of all learners.

    FUNCTION AND PURPOSE

Collaboration

·         Liaise closely with the teachers, educational assistants, the multi-disciplinary team and parents who participate as part of each child’s support team.

·         Consult and participate in meetings with other professionals (both within and outside of the school); make recommendations for additional services for children/students as needed.

·         Support classroom teams to implement strategies within the classroom environment.

·         Provide in servicing to teachers, Educational Assistants, and families to help support needs.

Instructional Support

 

·         Develop and recommend activities to target individual goals and needs of children/students.

·         Demonstrate activities with large and small groups of children/students.

·         Collaborate to develop programming adaptations and strategies as required.

·         Support teachers and school teams in transitioning children/students to other grades/programs/schools.

·         Participate in development of department resources and initiatives as directed by the OT supervisor.

Activities to maintain professional accreditation as per ACOT guidelines.

·         EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

·         Graduate of a Masters or Bachelors of Science in Occupational Therapy or equivalent.

·         Registration with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapist (ACOT) is mandatory; continuing professional development as per ACOT guidelines; professional liability as per ACOT guidelines.

Experience

Experience working in preschool, kindergarten and an educational setting is preferred; experience in pediatrics is strongly recommended.

·         Ability to administer, score and interpret standardized pediatric occupational therapy assessments.

·         Identify difficulties in fine-motor, visual-motor, perceptual-motor, self-help, and regulation

PICKY EATING GROUP ON THURSDAYS SEPTEMBER 16,23,30, OCTOBER 7, 14,21 in Edmonton

QUALIFICATIONS
Age 4 - 7. Child must be able to sit for at least
10 minutes at the table.

ABOUT THE PICKY EATERS GROUP
Picky Eaters Group will provide caregivers with practical feeding
strategies to help their child accept new foods into their diet. We
will explore fun ways to play with food and get your child more
involved in the mealtime routine. Caregivers will also learn
strategies to select and prepare foods for your child, so they are
more likely to give it a try.
Feeding Evaluation
Each family will be asked to complete a feeding history
questionnaire prior to the start of the group and identify at least 3
foods you would like your child to learn to eat.
Feeding Treatment
There will be a total of 6 sessions. Each treatment session is 1 hour.
The therapists will work with the child and the family once a week
to assess and address the various factors involved with eating.
The goal of the treatment is to target individual goals of the child
and assist caregivers in creating a successful home program.
Individual recommendations will be provided at the end of this
group.
Please let usknow if your child is on a special diet such as gluten
free, casein free, lactose free, wheat free or if they have any
allergies.
*This group requires a minimum number of children in order to run

Growing Changes: Occupational Therapy Services for Children

Fine Motor Spring Camp in April/May 2020


A four week fun and interactive camp for children in grades 1 - 3 who find printing
or other fine motor activities challenging. The camp will be run by an experienced
pediatric occupational therapist. A multi-sensory approach will be used along with
co-operative games and crafts to practice the skills needed for hand functioning.
This camp is designed for children who may be experiencing mild to moderate
delays in fine motor development or who would benefit from extra practice.
The camp places an emphasis on grasp development, formation of lower case
letters, legible printing, copying shapes and letters, using school tools (pencils,
scissors, glue), in hand manipulation skills, eye hand coordination and strength.
This includes a summary report identifying individual children's strengths, areas
of need, and suggestions for further skill development will be provided.
This camp will use a multi-sensory approach combining fine and gross motor
movement to enhance learning. Parents are encouraged to attend the first of the
four sessions in order to help their child feel more at ease in the group and to
learn how to support their child with printing practice at home.

Days: April 18, 25, May 2, 9 (4 sessions)

Bio: Nicole Hnatiuk is an occupational therapist/social-cognitive therapist in Edmonton, Alberta. Nicole received her Bachelor of Science (2010) and Master of Science-Occupational Therapy (2012) from the University of Alberta. Nicole works as an occupational therapist in a local school district working with children from ages 4-20, including implementing Social Thinking® into programming. Nicole’s interest in Social Thinking® began when she noticed that many educators would ask for strategies for kids who struggled with their “social skills”. Since 2014, Nicole has been passionate about building her skills in Social Thinking® methodology. She has attended eight Social Thinking® conference days, completed Social Thinking® Clinical Training Program (2018) and volunteered for the month long Social Thinking® Summer Session B at Social Thinking® Stevens Creek clinic in San Jose, CA (2019).

Torticollis & Plagiocephaly FEBRUARY 1-2, 2020 in Edmonton



Torticollis & Plagiocephaly: Assessment & Treatment of Infants & Children
“Pulling it Together”
     This dynamic evolving course will concentrate on progressive, effective evaluation and treatment schemes for infants and young children with a diagnosis of torticollis with or without plagiocephaly, including challenging cases. The course is designed to provide therapists with current research and recommendations pertaining to the implications of torticollis, sleep posture and increased use of positional devices on infant postural and motor development. Current evidence-based clinical pathways and guidelines for management of torticollis, movement impairments and infant head shape, including Clinical Practice Guidelines from APTA - Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy, will be discussed and incorporated. Red flags for related early infancy and preschool diagnoses will be appraised. Current functional, clinically oriented evaluation and evidence based treatment strategies for infants and young children that can be integrated into routines and play will be provided. Diagnostic procedures and surgical intervention will be reviewed. Recommendations for follow-up and secondary specialist consultations will be presented. Emphasis on home exercise programs, effective strategies, and long term follow-up to team with parents will be explored throughout both days.
            Learning opportunities for therapists and medical professionals involved in pediatrics will transpire through lecture, case reports, group problem solving, video review, patient demonstration and lab practicum. The extensive use of pictures and videos throughout the 2 days of intensive course materials will allow participates to problem solve and identify movement and tissue impairments related to the diagnosis of torticollis, providing functional ways to evaluate and treat.
SUGGESTED AUDIENCE: Physical, Occupational & Speech Therapists; Nurses, including NICU,        Nurse Practitioners, Orthotists, Physician Assistants, and Physicians
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1.       Identify the incidence, etiology and pathophysiology of torticollis and discuss the importance of early identification and early referral through systematic screenings and evaluations by health care providers
2.       Identify the impact of torticollis on movement and associated body structures and function.
3.       Problem solve current evidenced based treatment regimes for torticollis
4.          Identify the impact on head shape that may be present with a diagnosis of torticollis
   a. Discuss guidelines, available research and problem solve solutions to manage                                  
      including helmet criteria and treatment                                                                                    
5.             Discuss the relationship of “the change in sleep posture,” effects of increased positional devices, and environmental influences on postural development
6.             Relate current research and recommendations pertaining to SIDS and the efficacy of back to sleep        a. Review diagnoses related to the health policy change
7.             Collaborate and cultivate parent/caregiver’s understanding of the child’s health condition, interventions, and compliance to home education/therapy program. and follow-up recommendations.
8.             Establish individualized goals and incorporate family centered evidenced based treatment regimes as part of their home education/therapy program. 
Faculty Description:
Having served the pediatric population since 1977, Cindy Miles, PT, PhD. PCS, CNDT established her pediatric private practice in 1981. Dr. Miles is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, School of Health Related Professionals and East Stroudsburg University with a Master of Education in exercise physiology. She also holds a PhD in Pediatric Science from the Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Her doctoral research was on potential risk factors related to the diagnosis of Torticollis. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties as a Pediatric Clinical Specialist, specializing in treating children from birth through to young adults. Cindy completed the eight week Pediatric NeuroDevelopmental training course and the Advanced Infant course. Dr. Miles is serving as President of the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy (APPT) and is presently the Co-Chair and Meeting Planner for the Academy’s Annual Conference (APPTAC).  She held the titles of  APPT Treasurer, Treasurer Elect and pediatric sports, fitness SIG chair. Dr. Miles presents nationally on pediatric private practice and reimbursement as well as nationally and internationally on Torticollis, Plagiocephaly, and Fitness for All Abilities.
