Call For Offers - Fieldwork Placement Sites

Happy New Year to our AB and NWT OTs! We hope you have had a lovely holiday season with lots of rest and relaxation.

(1) Call for Offers for 2015 spring and summer placement sessions:

A friendly reminder that the initial response deadline for the 'call for offers' for the upcoming spring and summer OT fieldwork sessions is Friday, January 16. Please forward your offers to Michelle Green (or enter them directly into HSPnet, if that service is available to you).

• Year 2/Level 3 placements: Mar 23 - May 1 (6 weeks) * dates can be delayed up to 2 weeks to accommodate spring break in the school systems
  
• Year 1/Level 1 placements: May 11 - June 26 (7 weeks)
• Year 2/Level 3/FINAL placements: June 29 - Aug 7 (6 weeks) ** dates are flexible and can be any 6 weeks between June 15 to the end of August to accommodate preceptor summer holidays
  

(2) Fieldwork Site Profiles:

Our UofA MScOT Program will be undergoing accreditation at the end of 2015. This process ensures that our program is achieving the high standard of education set for occupational therapy across Canada. The Canadian Guidelines for Fieldwork Education in Occupational Therapy (CGFEOT) is the national document that directs OT fieldwork education. Please take a few minutes to review the CGFEOT guidelines found here.

One of the guidelines is to maintain a Fieldwork Site Profile (FSPro) for each placement site (updated at least every 5 years) that provides basic site-specific information to students and fieldwork coordinators. Rather than attempting to scan and send each of you the 'old' form that we have for your site, we are asking that you take a few minutes to complete a new Fieldwork Site Profile.

The Fieldwork Site Profile (FSPro) form is attached. Please decide who might be the best person at your site to compile this information and complete only one form per site with a breakdown of specific services or practice areas being added under some of the headings. My advice would be to keep the information provided simple and straight-forward so that it doesn't need to be updated too frequently!

Now that the new digital era is upon us, we will be posting the FSPro on an OT department website so that students can easily access the information provided to assist them in making informed decisions about placement selection. (If your site is an HSPnet user, then you can also elect to post the FSPro on your 'site profile' on within HSPnet.)

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

FULL-TIME

The Ability Society is looking for an Occupational Therapist to join our Early Birds team.  Our program services children (2-17 years of age) and their families.  The majority of our clients are children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disorders.  Therapy is held in the home, community and at our office.  Therapy is provided following a parent teaching/coaching model with a play therapy focus.  This is a sole charge position, working within a close-knit and supportive multidisciplinary team.

Applicants who are independent and self-motivated, with strong teamwork and communication skills are encouraged to apply.  Applicants must have the ability to develop and implement service plans in collaboration with both the families and the members of the multidisciplinary team.  Applicants must have the flexibility and innovative thinking required to provide high-quality services to a culturally diverse caseload.  Applicants must also have the ability to work flexible hours (weekdays).

Responsibilities include:

·         Assess child’s strengths and needs in motor development, sensory processing and modulation, self-care and feeding skills as they relate to occupational performance

·         Develop Occupational Therapy goals as part of a multidisciplinary service plan

·         Implement Occupational Therapy intervention, including teaching parents and supervising therapy aides (i.e., Family Coaches)

·         Complete progress reports, assessment reports and other relevant documentation

·         Liaise with community organizations and school therapy teams

·         Oversee the development of the Ability Society’s new multi-sensory room and supervise the sensory room program

Qualifications:

·         Preferred experience with feeding

·         Undergraduate or graduate degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution

·         Current registration with Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT)

·         Alberta driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle

·         Experience with children with autism and/or children with disabilities a necessity

·         Minimum of 3 years’ experience preferred

Hi everyone!

We are very excited to announce that we have added several new groups to our repertoire for the upcoming Winter Session! Take a look:

Kids Club Group 4 weeks 1 hour, weekday evenings
each 4 week program will be comprised of a common interest such as: Builders Club kids will have an opportunity to build with different materials to explore collaborative building and share their favourite hobby with friends. Games Club friends will get together to learn and play new and familiar games such as "don't break the ice", "Buckeroo", etc...Club members will be invited to bring their own favourites to share with friends. Prepare yourselves for 8 weeks of mystery, adventures and of course science. Your two lead scientists have worked hard to prepare experiments that should provide you clues as to how on Earth a member of IRInc managed to steal the product of what was one of the most exciting science experiments ever preformed! You will be asked to get creative, get messy and get prepared to be amazed by some pretty wacky science. This program will target fine motor development, creative thinking, problem solving and social interactions - science experiments will require turn taking, sharing and patience. 

Saturdays will of course have Gym Buddies, Small Talk -Imagination Station and ST Movie Makers. 

Quirky Teens will run only if there is a minimum of 6 teens enrolled.
