Social Thinking Workshop
Kari Palmar, presenter and co-author of Inflexible Flexible You, will begin by setting the foundation and talk through the following concepts: What is social? What is the difference between teaching social skills and social thinking? How does social typically develop (info supported by research) and what happens when it does not? We then explore the learning style of a child with a social cognitive challenge.
This foundational knowledge will be something referred back to throughout the two days. Attending 2 days of this amazing Social Thinking conference, gives the foundation. The rest of Day 1 (and the following day) then weaves between theory and developmental information and very practical strategies and ideas to take back to homes, classrooms, community, and private practice settings.
At the end of both days, attendees will feel they have many ideas they can implement immediately. It is found that best learning occurs when weaving back and forth between theory and practical ideas instead of dividing up into 2 separate courses. You do not want to miss either day!!!!
We know that the students and children in our lives are complicated! In many cases, the knowledge and training in working with this population is very limited. To truly serve this group, we have to understand the depth and complexity of their challenges. But where do we start with a social cognitive challenge? What do we treat? How do we do it? And understanding that there is such wide variation with our students and children. Because the nature of the challenges are complex, two days will give you the time to explain and explore answers to all of these questions. Social Thinking is widely known for taking the complex, abstract nature of teaching social and boiling it down to user friendly teaching for both professionals, parents, families, and students.

In further communications with Kari, it has become aware to us how this conference may be exceptionally beneficial to parents and your families. She plans to set the foundation by discussing what social thinking is, the difference between social skills and social thinking and to explain how social thinking typically develops. From there Kari will provide practical strategies that can be implemented immediately. assessment for an adult client with an ABI post MVA, in Red Deer, and to

Children's Vision Assessment Act
Alberta's Bill 203 - Children's Vision Assessment Act, was
introduced last week in the Legislature. This historic Bill would ensure
ALL Alberta children would have the benefit of at least one vision exam
by an optometrist or ophthalmologist before they start school. As we
all know, vision development is critical in behaviour, learning, and
development.
Vision concerns impact upon everything from reading,
to visuomotor and gross-motor skills, balance, coordination, and
cognitive performance. Currently, at best 20% of children do have an
exam before Grade 1, meanwhile as many as 25% of all children have some
sort of vision impediment that goes undetected/unmanaged.

All OTs are encouraged to share this news and
follow the progress of the Bill through the Legislature. You are also
encouraged to write to MLA Mary Anne Jablonski to voice your support for
something that is long overdue.
